If you love the warm, nostalgic comfort of apple pie but don't always have the time (or energy) to make a full one, these Apple Pie Roll Ups are about to become your new favourite apple dessert! They capture everything we adore about classic apple pie -- buttery pastry, cinnamon-kissed apples, that irresistible sweet aroma -- but in a fun bite-sized form that's ready in minutes!
They're quick. They're easy, and they deliver almost instant apple-pie gratification. Serve them warm with custard or ice cream or enjoy them just as they are. Simple ingredients. Simple steps. Simply delicious.
If there is one thing we really love this time of year it is apple pie. My mom made beautiful apple pies, with a buttery flaky crust and delicious soft apple filling. When one of those was on the menu we were all very happy campers.
You don't always have time to make a full pie however. They can be very time consuming and somewhat fiddly. On those occasions when you want an apple pie, but don't want to put in the work involved, rather than buy a ready made pie, might I suggest these apple pie roll ups.
They give you all of the satisfaction of an actual apple pie, but with a whole lot less fuss and are actually very quick and easy to make.
They're like an apple pie, but much smaller . . . much quicker . . . and much easier to make.
They're every bit as delicious . . . you get the savoury flavour of a butter pastry . . . spread with butter and cinnamon sugar . . . wrapped around tart slices of apple, then brushed with yet more butter and an additional sprinkling of cinnamon sugar. (I add a bit of nutmeg for an added depth of flavour.)
Baked in a hot oven for around 15 minutes and you have almost near instant apple pie gratification!! Oh soooooo scrummy!! To make the perfect dessert, simply add some warm custard for pouring over top in the British style, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
🍎INGREDIENTS NEEDED
TO MAKE
APPLE PIE ROLL UPS🍎
There really isn't anything complicated about this recipe. You can use a ready made crust for ease or make your own. It's up to you!
1/2 cup (100g) sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp freshly ground nutmeg
1 (14 oz/320g) package of ready rolled all butter short crust pastry
3 TBS melted butter
2 medium tart apples, peeled and cut into 6 wedges each
🍎INGREDIENTS NOTES🍎
Sugar
In the UK I would use caster sugar. It dissolves quickly giving the cinnamon sugar mixture a nice coating on both the pastry or the apples. If you like a bit of crunch by all means use granulated sugar.
Ground Cinnamon
Cinnamon is the main warm spice here. It brings that classic apple pie flavor to the mix. It gets used both on the pastry and on the apples. You could vary this a bit by adding a bit of freshly grated nutmeg or cardamom for a lovely cozy note.
All Butter Short Crust Pastry
Ready-rolled pastry is what makes this recipe quick and easy while still tasting rich and homemade. I like to use an all butter pastry as it is the closest to scratch pastry. You can also choose to make your own pastry if you wish.
Melted Butter
Butter brushed onto the pastry helps the cinnamon sugar to stick and encourages beautiful browning. I brush it both before rolling and again on top.
Tart Apples
Tart apples balance the sweetness perfectly. I use medium sized tart apples, cut into wedges. Their bright flavor keeps the roll ups from becoming overly sweet.
🍎HOW TO MAKE APPLE PIE ROLL UPS🍎
A apple dessert was never easier. Prepare to fall in love!
Preheat the oven to 425*F/230*C/gas mark 7. Line a large baking sheet with baking parchment. Set aside. (The baking parchment will help to prevent the roll ups from sticking to the pan. You could also brush the parchment with some butter if you wished.)
Whisk together the sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg in a small bowl. Set aside. (You will be dividing this and using it in two places.)
Unroll the pastry onto a lightly floured surface. Brush with 2 TBS of the melted butter. (I used a rectangular sheet of pastry. If it is round that will work as well.)
Sprinkle with all but 1 TBS of the cinnamon sugar. (Reserve this to sprinkle on top.) Cut the sheet into 12 inch strips along the long side. (If the pastry is in a round cut it into 12 narrow wedges.)
Lay a wedge of apple on the short end of each pastry strip and roll them up, with the sugared side of the pastry against the apple. (If you are using a round crust, you will need to place the apple on the widest end and roll up from there.)
Place them onto the lined baking sheet. Brush with the remaining melted butter and sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar evenly over top. (Leave space between each so they don't stick together.)
Bake for 13 to 15 minutes until the pastry is golden brown. Serve warm, with or without custard. Delicious!
Ice cream or whipped cream also go very well with these!
🍎HINTS & TIPS FOR SUCCESS🍎
Choose tart apples for the perfect flavor balance
This recipe uses medium tart apples, which keep the rollups bright and flavorful without becoming overly sweet. A granny smith works well and also keeps its shape.
Use all-butter pastry for the best taste and texture
I recommend all butter short-crust pastry because it is the closest to homemade. Rich and flaky and perfect for baking at high heat.
Don't skip the melted butter
Brushing the pastry before and after rolling with the butter helps the cinnamon sugar to stick and gives that gorgeous golden finish.
Reserve a little cinnamon sugar for the final sprinkle
This gives the tops a sparkling caramelized crust as they bake.
Add a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom for deeper, warmer flavour
This is a little secret, but not totally necessary. It adds a lovely cozy note.
Bake in a hot oven for quick puff and crisp edges
The high temperature ensures that the pastry cooks quickly and stays flaky.
Serve warm for maximum "apple pie" comfort
Warm roll ups give that instant apple pie gratification. Especially when served with warm custard or cold vanilla ice cream.
🍎FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS🍎
WHAT KIND OF APPLES WORK BEST?
I like to use a tart apple, such as a Granny Smith. They also hold their shape beautifully. Medium sized apples cut into wedges balance beautifully with the sweet cinnamon sugar.
CAN I USE HOMEMADE PASTRY INSTEAD OF READY-ROLLED?
Yes, homemade pastry works beautifully. I used ready rolled for ease of prep and speed, but homemade is even better.
CAN THESE BE MADE AHEAD?
You can certainly make and bake them ahead of time, reheating them briefly in a warm oven.
CAN THESE BE FROZEN?
Certainly. Just pack them into an airtight freezer container. Label, date and freeze. Remove to the counter top to thaw several hours prior to using and reheat in a warm oven. These will keep frozen for up to three months.
🍎A FEW OTHER APPLE DESSERTS YOU MIGHT ALSO ENJOY🍎
We love apple desserts in this house, especially this time of year when the apples are ripening. Here are a few more we also enjoy!
OATY APPLE CRUMBLE - Everything a cozy apple dessert should be. Tender, well-flavoured apples baked until soft and bubbling, tucked beneath a golden, buttery oaty topping that's crisp at the edges and chewy in the middle and wonderfully wholesome thanks to the oats. The filling is brightened with lemon and orange zest, warm cinnamon and a touch of nutmeg. This is like an oatmeal cookie melting into warmly spices apples.
DUTCH APPLE TURNOVERS - Everything we love about apple pie, wrapped up in a warm, golden, handheld treat. Each turnover is filled with tart apple and sweet raisins, gently sweetened with white and brown sugars and spiced with cinnamon, freshly grated nutmeg, cardamom and jus a whisper of cloves. A touch of vanilla, rum and almond extracts add beautiful depth and warmth to the filling. Everything is tucked into an all-butter short crust pastry for that perfect flaky bite.

Notes
You can of course make your own pastry from scratch. I have used ready roll for ease and speed. If you buy the all butter one (and I recommend that you do) it's pretty good and very close to homemade. I highly recommend my Butter & Lard pastry recipe. You can find that here.

This is a book I wrote several years ago, published by Passageway Press. I am incredibly proud of this accomplishment. It is now out of print as my publisher went out of business after Covid, but you can still find used copies for sale here and there. If you have a copy of it, hang onto it because they are very rare. This was a real labor of love for me and a dream come true as I had always wanted to write a book since I was a child. Hopefully I will be able to republish it one day. If you know of a publisher who is looking for something let me know!
Welcome, I'm Marie
Canadian lover of all things British. I cook every day and like to share it with you!
A third of my life was spent living in the UK. I learned to love the people, the country and the cuisine. I have always been an Anglophile. You will find plenty of traditional British recipes here in my English Kitchen. There are lots of North American recipes also, but then again, I am a Canadian by birth. I like to think of my page as a happy mix of both. If you are looking for something and cannot find it, don't be afraid to ask! I am always happy to help and point you in the right direction, even if it exists on another page, or in my extensive collection of cookbooks. I moved back to Canada in the year 2020 and have been busy building a new life for myself back in my homeland. I am largely retired now, except for this little space on the internet that I call home. I hope you will stay a while and have a good boo around. There's lots of deliciousness here to explore!
