Meals of the Week, January 11th to January 17th, 2026

On Sundays I like to share with you my dear readers, my meals of the week. All of the main dishes I have enjoyed as my dinners each day. This week was rather different in that I had company for most of the week. I was also sick, with kidney stones, waiting for surgery, having the surgery and recovering from the surgery. So it's been a bit of a mish mash. I know you will understand.

I am sure you will also understand if I keep this really brief as I am still not feeling very well. Here's hoping that next week will see some improvement!

So here they are. My Meals of the Week for the past seven days.

Pot Roast

SUNDAY, January 11th - Sunday Dinner at my sister's

On Sunday I had my usual Sunday dinner at my sister's place. Dan and Dad were there also. My sister cooked a lovely pot roast dinner.  She always does a delicious roast. We enjoyed it with roasted potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots.

I am sharing my recipe for Instant Pot Pot Roast with you for this day.   Its really good. The meat always comes out tender and delicious and the gravy is also fabulous!

Oven Braised Beef Stew

MONDAY, January 12th - Oven Braised Beef Stew

I made a huge pot of stew on Monday as my son and grandson were arriving from the Island on Tuesday.  I was supposed to have my cleaners coming in the late morning early afternoon on Tuesday so I wanted to get a step ahead of it.  My son LOVES my beef stew.  It is something he always requests.

I pretty much doubled the recipe and I confess I enjoyed a bowl of it along with a slice of buttered bread for my supper.  I just put the slice of bread in the bottom of a shallow bowl and ladled some stew over top. It was gorgeous.

Chicken with Stars Soup

TUESDAY, January 13th - Chicken Soup

I ended up in emergency all day on Tuesday.  I started having pains late Monday night and knew it was kidney stones.  I went to the emergency here in town first thing, then they sent me up to Kentville for a CT scan. I was sent home and told not to eat or drink anything from midnight on.

My son and grandson arrived and they enjoyed some stew and I enjoyed a cup of chicken noodle soup. I was not very hungry and was in bed by 7:30 to be honest, I was in so much pain.

I am sharing my recipe for Chicken and Stars Soup. This is a really delicious chicken soup. Not really spicy or anything. Perfect for when you just want a bit of comfort.  If you wanted to make it a heartier meal you could always serve a sandwich on the side.

Turkey Dinner

WEDNESDAY, January 14th - Dinner with the family at The Big Scoop

The hospital called me at noon and told me to go ahead and eat as they weren't going to be able to fit me in on Wednesday, but to refrain from eating and drinking as of midnight on Wednesday.

The pain killers were doing their job admirably, so we all went out to dinner with my father and sister at the Big Scoop.  I had a turkey dinner, but this time I had French fries with it instead of mashed potatoes. I knew it was going to be quite a while before I had anything to eat again. I really enjoyed it.

Social Tea Biscuits

THURSDAY, January 15th - at the hospital all day until night

I was at the hospital all day on Thursday waiting for my kidney stone procedure. My son took me to the hospital. They were going to put me to sleep and then blast the stone with a lazer. So nothing to eat or drink all day. They finally took me in for the procedure about 6 pm. I was back in my room by 7:30 and my son was there waiting for me, along with a couple of tea biscuit cookies and some apple juice, but to be honest I did not feel like eating anything. I ate two just to make them happy.

They were unable to blast the kidney stone as it was too far up. They left a stent in and sent me home. I will need to go back in three to six weeks.

My son took such good care of me. He is such a good man.  I was back home and in bed by 8:30. I couldn't handle being up any longer. My son had bought a pizza for him and my grandson, which kept them happy.  I felt bad that their trip was not turning out as expected, but my son was pleased that he was there to help me when I needed him most.

New York Style Pizza

FRIDAY, January 16th - Leftover pizza

My son had to get back to the Island for work so he and Jon left on Friday.  I was not feeling the greatest and so I had a piece of leftover pizza for my supper.  Other than that I pretty much only drank water all day.

In it's place I am leaving my recipe for New York Style Pizza. This is an excellent pizza with a thin foldable crust and a delicious sauce. You can top it as you want with your favorite toppings. I usually like olives, onions, peppers and cheese.  A salad goes very nicely on the side.

Tourtiere

SATURDAY, January 17th - Dad's 92nd Birthday

I couldn't really go out anywhere so my sister, Dan and dad came here to my place to celebrate our father's 92nd Birthday.  Cindy brought everything over. A lovely Tourtiere, which my father calls meat pie, but is one of his favorites. She also brought all of the vegetables which she cooked here. Fried Potatoes, broccoli, carrots and then for dessert we had some birthday cake.

Dad was just thrilled. He had a really good day.  He went to the Big Scoop for breakfast and they had a card waiting for him at the table from them and there was another card from someone else.  Plus they gave him his breakfast for free. He felt really special and so he should!

And so that was my meals of the week for this week. Not the best, but hopefully next week will be better. I am not in any pain per se, but the stent they left in makes me feel like I want to go to the bathroom constantly, which gets worse the minute I stand.  So there you go. Not sure how I am going to tolerate this for another three to six weeks but you have to do what you have to do and it is not life threatening. It could always be worse.
