Hot Italian Hoagies

Wednesday 3 January 2018

These are great sandwiches to make and enjoy on nights when you have had a really busy day and just want something quick, hearty and delicious.

Or on those nights when a bunch of you are together and watching the game on the telly, be it hockey, footie or whatever sport floats your boat!

They are quick and easy to make, as easy as layering ingredients into split soft sub buns and baking them in the oven . . .

I like to spread the cut buns with some Parmesan Garlic butter first  . . .  just for added flavour, and if there is any leftover, you can also spread it on the tops of the buns here and there for added flavour.

After that you simply layer in four cheese blend (Mozzarella, Cheddar, Jack and Edam) with sliced Italian meats  . . .

Thinly sliced salami  . . . peppery pepperoni . . .  rich italian herbed ham . . . or plain if you cannot get the herbed . . .

A hint of spicy sandwich slaw topping or Italian Giardiniera mix  . . .  and a final sprinkle of cheese and they are ready for the oven  . . .

If you are in the UK, this is the pickle I used.  Its got a nice heat and crunch without being over the top!  You can leave it out altogether, but it really does add a nice touch and extra flavour.

How soft or how crisp you want depends all on you.  Baked closer together you get soft sides . . .  leaving a bit of space between and you get crisp toasty sides.  Its your choice . . .

Ten to Fifteen minutes in the oven and you are rewarded with a delicious sandwich that everyone is going to love! Game day or not!

You can serve them with potato chips, or oven chips, potato salad, whatever you like to serve with hot sandwiches.  All go down a real treat!

*Hot Italian Hoagies*
Serves 6
Perfect for a quick and easy supper, and oh so delicious!  Bake the buns close together for soft sides, or further apart for crisp.

6 unsliced soft mini sub rolls
65g butter softened (1/4 cup)
1 tsp garlic Italian seasoning
3 TBS Parmesan Cheese
12 slices Salami
12 slices Pepperoni
12 slices Italian ham with herbs
225g four cheese blend (2 cups)
(Mine has Edam, Jack, Cheddar and Mozzarella)
Spicy pickled salad mix like pickled Giardiniera Mix (optional)
(I used Baxter's Spicy Slaw Deli Topper)

Preheat the oven to 180*C/350*F gas mark 4. Slice your sub rolls almost all the way through from the top to bottom.

Cream together the butter, seasoning and Parmesan cheese.  Spread a portion of this onto the insides of the sub rolls.  Layer 2 TBS of cheese blend, 2 slices salami, 2 slices Pepperoni, 2 slices ham, 2 TBS hot pickle mix (if using) and 2 TBS of the four cheese blend into each bun.  Place into a large baking dish with the open side facing up.

Bake for 10 minutes for a soft sided roll or a bit longer for a crisp roll.  Serve hot with your favourite accompaniments.  We had oven chips.

We really enjoy these (even if my husband does eat his with a knife and fork all proper-like).  These are filling, and delicious.  I love the touch of heat from the spicy pickle.  They are quick and easy to throw together which makes them winners all round!  Bon Appetit!

  1. Oh Marie, these hoagies look so good! It makes me think of hot pastrami rolls with provolone cheese dripping down the sides when bitting into one! I haven't eaten one of those in a long time! After going out dancing at night a friend and I use to go buy a hot pastrami grinder full of pastrami and melted cheese, while talking boy talk. Lol.

I have never seen a candy cane as big as the one your grandson Luke was eating!

Stay warm it's 6 degrees tonight here! Why oh why does the dog want to keep on going out when it's colder outside?! I'm whining now! Lol.

    Love and big hugs!xo

    1. Oh Jan, I love Pastrami sandwiches, especially Reubens. I found big candy canes like that one year when my children were small. I have a picture somewhere of my three year old Doug trying to eat his. The candy cane was almost as big as he was! Its not too cold here today, but the wind is ferocious! Love and hugs, xoxo

    1. They really are very good Monique, and so simple! The first meal that J made for you sounds so delicious. I am wondering what a Monte Christo potato is. I love potatoes! I can't imagine you not cooking, but then when I think back when I first started cooking, it is hard to believe as well. I have grown so much! xo

  4. That sounds like a wonderful idea! (Although after eight or nine days of ham, at the moment I feel like leaving that one out! This will change in time!) It would be really fun and easy -- and you could make it up early, too. That slaw topping you used looks yum. Don't think we can get it here but I'm sure I can find something good! This is a keeper!

    1. You are right Jeanie, you could make them up early and then just pop them into the oven when you wanted to eat. Very quick, fun and yes, easy! Any spicy type of pickle would work. Hot pickled peppers would be great also! Thanks so much for your lovely comment! xo
