Cinnamon Roll Toast - An Easy Breakfast Treat

Monday, 2 November 2026

Cinnamon Roll Toast

When my youngest lad was a child, he loved for me to buy him the frozen toaster Strudels you could buy at the grocery store.   He was a very finicky eater, and there was not a lot that he liked to eat really.

He would go on binges and one week all he would eat was hotdogs . . . the next it might be pizza . . . or mashed potatoes.

There were times I really worried he would be too skinny or never eat normally . . . and so when he wanted something like the toaster strudels, I would get them for him because at least he was eating something.

Cinnamon Roll Toast

Those things are kind of expensive though . . . especially when you have five children, and they're full of preservatives and all sorts. Not ideal.  He liked toast, but it could only be a certain colour . . . not too dark, or too light.  It was hit and miss.

He did like cinnamon toast though . . . but that can be really sugary.

I ended up coming up with this version of cinnamon toast that is not too loaded with sugar and actually tastes pretty much like cinnamon rolls.   AND . . . it's so super easy to do!   He love, love,  LOVED  it.

You just butter a slice of bread with softened butter on both sides, sprinkle with powdered cinnamon and then toast/grill it in a nonstick skillet . . . until the bread is all toasty and golden . . . crisp even, especially at the edges, but the insides are soft and warm, just like a cinnamon roll.

I added a simple powdered sugar glaze for just a hint of sweetness, without going over the top. It is entirely optional. Sometimes I add it and sometimes I don't.

The end result however, icing or not, is something that tastes deliciously similar to a cinnamon roll without all the time and faffing about involved!  Plus if you are making it for children, you get to control the sugar in it, if any! I call that a win!

Cinnamon Roll Toast

INGREDIENTS NEEDED
TO MAKE
🤎CINNAMON ROLL TOAST🤎

There is nothing too out of the ordinary required here. Simple ingredients put together in a simple and delicious way.

For the Toast:
  • 2 thick slices of your favorite bread (Raisin bread is particularly nice!)
  • 1 TBS softened butter
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
For the glaze:
  • ½ cup icing sugar
  • ½ TBS water
  • 1/8 tsp vanilla

Cinnamon Roll Toast

🤎NOTES ON INGREDIENTS🤎

Thick sliced bread
This is the whole base for this recipe. Choose a good one. I like Cinnamon raisin, but white is great, as are many other kinds of bread.  Use what you like to eat.

Softened butter
This is what helps the bread to toast in the skillet, lending an authentic buttery finish.

Ground cinnamon
This is the star of the show, and where this toast gets all it's flavour.

FOR THE OPTIONAL GLAZE

Icing sugar
Also called confectioner's or powdered sugar, this forms the base of the glaze.

Vanilla
This gives a touch of rich flavour to the glaze giving it a more authentic cinnamon roll taste

Water
This is what gives the glaze it's drizzle consistency. Be sure not to use too much. You want a glaze that drizzles easily but that is not water. You could also use milk if you would rather.

Cinnamon Roll Toast

HOW TO MAKE
🤎CINNAMON ROLL TOAST🤎

A very simple make.

  1. Spread both sides of the bread with the softened butter and then sprinkle evenly with the cinnamon. (No sugar needed. Just cinnamon.)
  2. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. (It should be hot enough that you can just barely hold the palm of your hand over it, but not red hot.)
  3. When hot put the bread in and brown on both sides. When done, remove to a plate. (Don't be in a rush.)
  4. Whisk together the icing sugar, water and vanilla until smooth and drizzle over the top of the hot toast. (Totally optional but very nice.)
  5. Serve warm.

Cinnamon Roll Toast

🤎HINTS & TIPS FOR SUCCESS🤎

Use thick slices of bread
Thicker slices of bread hold up better in the toasting process, creating a toast that's crispy on the outside and tender in the middle.

Soften the butter first
Soft butter spreads much easier on the bread without risk of tearing.

Watch carefully while toasting
You can run the risk of it burning if you don't keep an eye on it. There is no sugar in the toast itself to burn, but the bread and the cinnamon can still burn if you are not careful.  Don't be in a rush.

Serve warm
Cinnamon Roll Toast is at its absolute best served fresh from the skillet while it is still warm and fragrant.

Add a simple glaze
For an authentic cinnamon roll flavour experience, drizzle with a quick icing made from powdered sugar and a splash of milk.

Cinnamon Roll Toast

🤎FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS🤎

WHAT TYPE OF BREAD IS BEST FOR THIS?
You can use any type of bread that you enjoy. I like cinnamon raisin bread, but thick white bread is another favourite. Having said that, you can use whole wheat, seeded, etc. There is no wrong.

DO I NEED TO USE BUTTER?
You could use margarine, but butter is really essential to give you a true cinnamon roll flavour.  I just use regular salted butter. Steer clear of tub type butters and margarines as they often have water beaten into them which can make your toast soggy instead of crisp.

CAN THIS BE MADE AHEAD OF TIME?
I don't really recommend making this delicious toast ahead of time. Since it is so quick to make I don't really think that should be an issue.

CAN THIS BE MADE FOR A CROWD?
Yes, simply double or tripe the ingredients and use more than one skillet. Or you can use a large electric grill or grill pan to make multiple servings.

WHAT MAKES THIS TASTE LIKE A CINNAMON ROLL?
The combination of bread, butter and cinnamon, along with the optional sweet glaze create all the cozy flavours of a traditional cinnamon roll, but in a quick and easy toast form.

WHAT CAN I SERVE WITH THIS?
Whilst this is awfully tasty on it's own, it's also delicious served with fresh fruit, yogurt, crispy bacon, breakfast sausages or hot  or cold drinks such as herbal tea, hot cocoa, regular tea and coffee, fruit juices or milk.

Meals of the Week, October 25th to 31st, 2026

Sunday, 1 November 2026

Meals of the Week, October 25th to 31st, 2026

Hello and welcome to my weekly Meals of the Week post. Every Sunday I like to share with you, my lovely readers, all of the deliciousness that I have enjoyed as my main meals over the past seven days.  That's a whole lot of tasty going on!

This is only my main meals and does not include my breakfasts or lunches. Most of the time I will eat my main meal at noon, unless I am going out to eat or eating at a friends, or having company. That is just works for me. I don't like to go to bed on a full stomach and as I am an early in-to-bedder, it just makes sense to eat my main meals earlier in the day.

I try always to keep my meals budget friendly as well. As a Senior on a fixed budget I need to watch my pennies and I know many of you do as well. I also like to keep things as healthy as I can, which can be a bit of a challenge in today's economy.

I have had my daughter staying with me these past few weeks as she recovers from her cancer surgery so I have also had to fit in with her tastes and dislikes as well. She is going back to her own apartment on Wednesday next so things will be getting more back to normal then.

Wherever I have eaten out or at my sister's (Sunday dinner most weeks) I have included a "like" recipe to use in it's place.

Doing this each week helps to keep me motivated and helps to keep me eating properly most of the time. I could be tempted to just eat ready meals, takeaways etc. as a single person living on their own. I am determined not to be that person.

I am determined that I will feed myself properly, even though I now live on my own. I don't want to get lazy and just eat out of cans, jars and frozen dinner packages.  Most of what I cook is pretty simple, admittedly, but its all from scratch.

So without waffling on any longer here are the meals which my daughter and I enjoyed over the past seven days. I hope that you enjoy seeing them and that you will be inspired to want to cook at few of them for yourself!

Roast Pork with Lemon & Potatoes

SUNDAY, October 25th - Roast Pork with Lemon & Potatoes

We were still not able to go to my sister's for Sunday dinner so I made dinner here at home for Eileen and myself. Roast Pork with Lemon & Potatoes. Adapted from a recipe from Nigel Slater's kitchen diaries, what you have here is a tender and juicy pork roast, browned and then roasted in the oven with potato and lemon wedges which have been tossed together with some oil and fennel seed. The whole thing is magnificently delicious.

We enjoyed this cut into slices and served with some of the potatoes, pan juices spooned over top and some brussels sprouts that I had roasted alongside the pork in the oven.

Amish Savoury Pork Pie

MONDAY, October 26th - Amish Savoury Pork Pie

I had leftover cooked pork to use up and so I made this recipe for Amish Savoury Pork Pie that I had not made in a long time.  This is not a pie in the real sense of pies. There is no top or bottom crust.  Just a type of a biscuit cobbler topping.  The leftover pork is browned in a skillet along with a few other bits and then you add potatoes, etc. create a gravy and simmer it until nice and thick. This goes into a casserole dish, dumpling batter is dropped on top and then the whole lot is baked until the dumplings are golden brown.

This made a lovely supper with some salad on the side. Nobody was complaining about having leftovers, and I got to use them up. It was a win/win all round. That's the key to using up leftovers. You have to reinvent them into something that is just as delicious if not more so that the original meal! I did cut the recipe down to make only two servings.

Creamy Italian Sausage with Bow Ties

TUESDAY, October 27th - Creamy Italian Sausage with Bow Ties

I know, pork again. I had thawed out what I thought was a package of hamburger but it ended up being ground pork. I made some of my homemade sweet Italian sausage meat and then used some of it to make this Creamy Italian Sausage with Bow Ties.

This is really, really, REALLY good!  The sauce was rich and flavorful.  There is the perfect ratio of sauce to pasta.  The quickness and ease of preparation, plus the deliciousness of it means that it is something we enjoy fairly often. We like easy in this house. With it's creamy tomato sauce, rich flavourful Italian sausage meat and scrumptious pasta, it always goes down a real treat.

Nothing special needed on the side except a salad (we did) and for the heartier eaters some crusty bread to mop up all that delicious sauce!

Chicken Alfredo Broccoli Pasta

WEDNESDAY, October 28th - One Pan Chicken Broccoli Alfredo Pasta

We were able to get out for a family dinner at the Big Scoop on Wednesday night. We had not been for several weeks while Eileen was recuperating from her operation. This was going to be Hazel's last week joining us due the the clocks changing on the 1st November so Eileen really wanted to see her.  Thankfully she did not find it all that hard to get around.  She's doing so well.

The special was this Chicken Broccoli Alfredo Pasta Bake (with garlic bread) which is what Eileen had. She loves her pasta.  The rest of us had very disappointing fish and chips. Cindy actually sent hers back and got another piece, but it was as bad as the first one. They just can't seem to get fish right for some reason.

In any case, I am sharing my recipe for this tasty One Pan Chicken Broccoli Alfredo Pasta in place of what Eileen had. (She really enjoyed her dinner.) With plenty of tender pieces of chicken, penne pasta, crispy tender broccoli florets and a creamy white cheesy sauce that can be as high or as low fat as you like. Its delicious and you get in one of your five a day at the same time. All you need on the side is perhaps some crusty bread to make sure you can mop up all of that tasty sauce!

Fruity Sausage Burgers

THURSDAY, October 29th - Fruity Sausage Burgers

Without meaning to we have had a very porky week. On Thursday I made us some Fruity Sausage burgers, using some British banger sausage meat. They are very simple to make, only three main ingredients. Sausage meat, dried cranberries and toasty pinenuts. This gets mixed together and shaped into patties. Ready for baking or frying to succulent perfection.

Tucked into soft rolls with a bit of spicy mayo and some rocket leaves, these always go down a real treat. All you need on the side is some salad perhaps, or some oven chips, maybe potato salad if you are not into oven chips. In any case, quick, easy to make and delicious. Works for me every time!

Turkey Sub Sandwich

FRIDAY, October 30th - Turkey Sub Sandwiches

Eileen had a birthday lunch out with her friends on Friday. They went to Angie's right behind where I live.  She wanted me to make Sub Sandwiches for our supper and who am I to refuse my beautiful daughter!  I made us each a six inch sub sandwich. loaded with plenty of fresh ingredients. Red onion, lettuce, Havarti cheese, sliced deli turkey, sliced peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes. Pickles, hot peppers and black olives (for me.)  All tucked into a six inch sub bun with plenty of garlic mayonnaise. They were really good.

I didn't have anything with mine. In fact, I could only eat half of it. Eileen had hers with an instant cup of soup. (Cheese and Broccoli)  I couldn't finish mine. But there were very good.  For the heartier eater you might want to add some potato chips or even oven chips.  Both would work well.

Air Fryer Hot Dogs

SATURDAY, October 31st - Early Dinner/Late Lunch out

Saturday being Halloween and Eileen feeling so much better, Eileen and I decided to celebrate by having lupper (lunch supper) out. We went to Dee Dees which is a place just down the road that we both like very much.

Eileen wanted a hot dog and chips and I had their classic burger, which I really love.  They will be closing soon for the Winter so this was also one last chance to enjoy their food, which is superior to the other place we go to with Dad.

In place of Eileen's hot dog I am sharing my recipe for Air Fryer Hot Dogs. Toasty soft-sided buns, topped with cheese and crispy fried onions, these always go down a real treat. I like to use all beef frankfurters.  We use the soft sided New England style buns. So yummy and the crispy onions add a lovely crunch.

The hearty eater could add some oven chips on the side, or Mac & Cheese, potato chips, potato salad, well, anything really. These go very well with most things.

And there you have it, my meals of the week for this, the last week of October, 2026 (How did that happen? Time is passing by so quickly!)  We did have a pork heavy week, and a bit sandwich type of meal heavy as well, but, well . . . some weeks are just like that!

Pumpkin Bread with Spiced Maple Butter - Moist, Easy, & Full of Fall Flavours

Saturday, 31 October 2026

Pumpkin Bread with Spiced Maple Butter

There's something special about a recipe that's been passed down through the family, especially when it arrives with a story attached. This Pumpkin Bread recipe is just that. One of those treasured recipes, it's moist, warmly spiced, and studded generously with sweet raisins and tart cranberries.

Perfect with a hot cup of tea or coffee, or even some hot apple cider, this easy pumpkin loaf has been a family favourite for years. Do make the homemade Spiced Maple Butter to spread over slices of the finished bread. This tasty addition lifts each slice to a whole new level of delicious ness!

Pumpkin Bread with Spiced Maple Butter

Many, many years ago my late mother-in-law gave me a small handwritten notebook for Christmas containing all of their family favorite recipes. This Pumpkin Bread recipe was one of the recipes included. I had never had pumpkin bread before, and in fact, didn't even really like pumpkin pie at that point. (I have since changed my position on that!)

I did have a fondness for quick breads however and made the bread. I fell in love with it. Through the years I have tweaked and adapted it to my own tastes and flavours. I also tend to cut the original recipe in half these days as it originally made two loaves. One for gifting and one for enjoying.

She used to add raisins and nuts to hers, but I chose to add a mix of raisins and dried cranberries, adding the nuts as a crunchy topping. I also added an optional Spiced Maple Butter for spreading on the finished loaf.  Back in the day most quick breads would be served thinly sliced and buttered.  This butter is a variation on that theme. It is the perfect addition to an already lovely quick bread for the holidays.

I can tell you that this bread  is fabulous cut, toasted (in the toaster) and spread with the Spiced Maple Butter for serving.  Moreish is an apt word to describe it. There is nothing nicer for breakfast with a nice hot cup of apple cider.

I really hope you will be inspired to make both the bread and the butter. I don't think you will be disappointed in the least!

Pumpkin Bread with Spiced Maple Butter

INGREDIENTS NEEDED
TO MAKE
🧡PUMPKIN BREAD WITH SPICED MAPLE BUTTER🧡

Simple, simple, simple.

For the bread:
  • 1 1/2 cups (180g) plain all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 large free range eggs
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice (see notes)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (190g) sugar
  • 3/4 cup (180ml) vegetable oil (I use light olive oil)
  • 3/4 cup (140g) tinned pumpkin
  • 1/3 cup (50g) sultana raisins
  • 1/3 cup (50g) dried cranberries
  • 1/2 cup (55g) chopped toasted pecans
For the spiced maple butter (optional)
  • 1/2 cup (120g) butter at room temperature
  • 2 TBS pure Maple Syrup
  • 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Pumpkin Bread with Spiced Maple Butter

🧡NOTES ON INGREDIENTS🧡

Plain All-Purpose Flour
Provides the structure for the loaf while keeping the crumb tender. Be careful not to overmix once the wet and dry ingredients are combined, or the bread may become dense.

Baking Powder & Soda
These work together to give the loaf its lovely rise and light texture. Make sure both are fresh for the best results.

Salt
A small amount of salt enhances all of the flavours and balances the sweetness of the bread.

Eggs
Eggs add structure, richness, and moisture. Room temperature eggs blend more easily into the batter.

Pumpkin Pie Spice
Brings warm autumn flavours to every bite. If you don't have pumpkin pie spice, you can make your own blend. I have given amounts in the recipe notes.

Vanilla Extract
Adds depth and warmth, complementing both the pumpkin and spices beautifully.

Sugar
Sweetens the loaf while also helping to create a moist, tender crumb.

Vegetable Oil
Oil makes this bread wonderfully moist and helps keep it fresh for several days. I tend to use  light olive oil.

Pumpkin Puree
The heart of the recipe. Be sure to use plain pumpkin puree, NOT pumpkin pie filling, which contains added sugar and spices.

Raisins and Dried Cranberries
Add natural sweetness, a pleasant tartness and a chewy texture. Coating them in the flour mixture helps prevent them from sinking during baking.

Chopped Toasted Pecans
Add a nice crunch to the top of  the loaf and added interest. They go very well with all the other flavours.

🧡MAPLE BUTTER NOTES🧡

Butter
Use good quality butter at room temperature so it whips up creamy and smooth.

Pure Maple Syrup
Adds authentic maple flavour. Pure Maple syrup is recommended for the best taste.

Pumpkin Pie Spice
Again, just a touch echoes the flavours in the bread and ties everything together.

Pumpkin Bread with Spiced Maple Butter

HOW TO MAKE
PUMPKIN BREAD WITH
🧡SPICED MAPLE BUTTER🧡

The butter part of this is entirely optional, but I will tell you that it is incredibly delicious spread over a slice of this bread that has been toasted.

  1. First make the maple butter. Using an electric whisk, whisk all of the ingredients together until well combined. Spoon into a serving dish. Keep refrigerated and covered, until you are ready to use. Serve at room temperature. (This is entirely optional, but it does go together very quickly and is a delicious addition.)
  2. Preheat the oven to 325*F/165*C/ gas mark 3. Butter a 9 by 5 inch loaf tin and line it with baking paper. Set aside. (I line it with a strip that goes lengthwise and then one that goes widthwise. placing them on top of each other.)
  3. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, soda, salt and pumpkin pie spice. Toss in the raisins and cranberries and jiggle them around to coat. (This helps to keep the raisins and berries from sinking to the bottom of the loaf while it bakes.)
  4. Whisk together the eggs, vanilla, sugar, vegetable oil and tinned pumpkin to combine well. (I use a wire whisk to do this.)
  5. Make a well in the dry ingredients and stir in the wet just to combine. Everything should be moist, but it is not necessary for them to be completely smooth. Spoon into the prepared baking tin. (A few lumps are perfectly acceptable and in fact desired. You just don't want any big dry streaks.)
  6. Sprinkle the chopped pecans evenly over top.
  7. Bake for 1 1/4 hours until the top springs back when lightly touched and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. (It may take slightly longer depending on your own. If you think the nuts are getting too brown, top loosely with a sheet of aluminum foil.)
  8. Let cool in the tin for 10 minutes before lifting out onto a wire rack to cool. Cut into slices to serve. Store in an airtight container.

HINTS AND TIPS
🧡FOR QUICK BREAD SUCCESS🧡

If you follow my hints and tips there is no reason why you can't bake a really great quick bread successfully!

1. Make sure all of your ingredients are at room temperature unless otherwise specified.

2. Use the best quality ingredients that you can afford and at your disposal.

3. Whisk all of the dry ingredients together in one bowl and your wet ingredients together in another bowl/beaker before combining together.

4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients together quickly and do not over mix. They need only be combined until the dry ingredients are evenly moistened without any large pockets or streaks of dry ingredients.

5. Do not over combine the dough.  A light hand is preferable.  A few lumps are perfectly okay and quite acceptable. Over combining yields a tougher bake.

6. Spoon into your baking pan/tin as soon as possible after combining in order to gain the maximum lift from the leavening used.

Pumpkin Bread with Spiced Maple Butter

🧡FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS🧡

CAN I USE FRESH PUMPKIN INSTEAD OF CANNED?
Yes, you can. Just make sure it is well drained and not overly watery, as excess moisture can affect the texture of the bread.

WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PUMPKIN PUREE AND PUMPKIN PIE FILLING?
Pumpkin puree contains only cooked pumpkin. Pumpkin pie filling contains added sugar, spices and other ingredients so should NOT be substituted in this recipe.

CAN I LEAVE OUT THE RAISINS OR CRANBERRIES?
Of course! The bread will still be delicious without them. You can also replace them with chopped nuts, chocolate chips or another dried fruit of your choice. If adding chocolate chips you can fold in 1 cup of semi-sweet or milk chocolate, or even white chocloate if desired.

CAN I MAKE THIS RECIPE INTO MUFFINS?
Yes, divide the batter between lined muffin cups and bake at the same temperature for approximately 18 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

CAN THIS RECIPE BE DOUBLED?
Certainly. Just double all of the ingredients and divide the batter between two loaf tins, baking for the allotted time as given in the recipe.

CAN THIS BREAD BE FROZEN ?
Yes. Wrap the cooled loaf tightly in plastic wrap and then foil. Label and date. Freeze for up to three months. Thaw overnight at room temperature.

CAN I MAKE THE MAPLE BUTTER AHEAD OF TIME?
Absolutely. The maple butter can prepared several days in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Let it soften slightly before serving.

This is a book I wrote several years ago, published by Passageway Press. I am incredibly proud of this accomplishment. It is now out of print as my publisher went out of business after Covid, but you can still find used copies for sale here and there. If you have a copy of it, hang onto it because they are very rare. This was a real labor of love for me and a dream come true as I had always wanted to write a book since I was a child. Hopefully I will be able to republish it one day. If you know of a publisher who is looking for something let me know!

Welcome, I'm Marie

Welcome, I'm Marie
Canadian lover of all things British. I cook every day and like to share it with you!
A third of my life was spent living in the UK. I learned to love the people, the country and the cuisine. I have always been an Anglophile. You will find plenty of traditional British recipes here in my English Kitchen. There are lots of North American recipes also, but then again, I am a Canadian by birth. I like to think of my page as a happy mix of both. If you are looking for something and cannot find it, don't be afraid to ask! I am always happy to help and point you in the right direction, even if it exists on another page, or in my extensive collection of cookbooks. I moved back to Canada in the year 2020 and have been busy building a new life for myself back in my homeland. I am largely retired now, except for this little space on the internet that I call home. I hope you will stay a while and have a good boo around. There's lots of deliciousness here to explore!
