Whether you’re cooking for one or whipping up a quick meal for the family, this air fryer toastie is a delicious way to turn everyday ingredients into something special.

Air Fryer Ham & Turkey Toastie

I wanted to make Eileen and I a Toastie Sandwich for our lunch on Saturday and decided that I wanted to do it in the Air Fryer to show her how easy it was to make a toasted sandwich in an air fryer and how much better the results were than by doing them in a skillet.

Doing a Toastie in the Air Fryer is really easy and you get a lovely crisp result. Never soggy or smashed like they can get in a skillet. The bread always comes out crisp and buttery on the outside and yet remains fluffy inside. Not gluey or mashed.

The flavors of this sandwich were spot on. You get the crisp and toasty golden brown garlic butter coated surface on both outsides, made a tiny bit more crunchy by sprinkling them with some Parmesan prior to air frying. And then inside, a bit of sweet/sharp heat from the use of a good honey mustard, a bit rich creaminess from the use of mayonnaise, and then the beautiful flavors of not one but two tasty deli meats, along with nutty oozy Swiss cheese.

I mean, what's not to like about that?? This was fabulous!

AIR FRYER HAM & TURKEY TOASTIE

You can use leftover sliced ham and turkey if you have them rather than deli meats. Its your choice.

  • 2 TBS butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp parsley flakes
  • 2 TBS Parmesan cheese
  • 3 slices of Swiss cheese

  • 2 slices of deli ham
  • mayonnaise to spread
  • 2 slices of deli turkey

NOTES ON INGREDIENTS

  • I used supermarket sourdough white bread. We love the flavor of it. Any good sturdy bread will do.
  • I used salted butter. That is all I keep in the house, make sure you use garlic powder and NOT garlic salt.
  • I used Kraft sliced Swiss Cheese.
  • I used French's Honey Dijon mustard and Kewpie Mayonnaise.
  • I used Maple Leaf deli sliced ham and turkey.

HOW TO MAKE
AIR FRYER HAM & TURKEY TOASTIE

Prepare to fall in love with this quick and delicious sandwich. Wonderfully hearty!

  1. Whisk the melted butter with the garlic powder and parsley flakes. Brush on the outer sides of each slice of bread. (I use a pastry brush for this and try to coat the whole surface.)
  2. Place one slice of bread, butter side down, in the basket of the air fryer. Spread the cut side of the bread with honey mustard to your taste. (You can be as generous with the honey mustard as you like.)
  3. Top with 1 slice of Swiss cheese and the two slices of ham. (I fold the ham up a bit to make it seem like a thicker layer.)
  4. Top with 1 more slice of Swiss cheese and the two slices of turkey. (Again fold the turkey up a bit for some texture.)
  5. Top with the final slice of Swiss cheese.
  6. Spread the cut side of the remaining piece of buttered bread with mayonnaise to taste. Place mayonnaise side down and butter side up on top of the sandwich. Sprinkle with 1 TBS of the Parmesan cheese. (Make sure the mayo side is inside the sandwich.)
  7. Preheat the air fryer to 400*F/200*C.
  8. Air fry the sandwich for 4 minutes.
  9. Remove from the air fryer. Carefully flip over so that the other buttered side is on top. Sprinkle with the remaining TBS of Parmesan cheese.
  10. Air fry the sandwich for a further 4 minutes at 400*F/200*C. It should now be heated through, the cheese should be melted and the sandwich should be golden brown. (If you think it needs a few more minutes, then do so. But watch carefully so that it doesn't burn.)
  11. Leave to sit for a few minutes before cutting in half and serving.

HINTS & TIPS FOR SUCCESS

  • Use good quality ingredients. You are what you eat and quality speaks for itself.
  • Use a good and sturdy white bread. I used a sour dough. You want your bread to be sturdy enough to be able to handle the weight of your ingredients.
  • Less is more. Don't be tempted to overstuff your sandwich.
  • You only need a light brushing of the garlic butter, if you use too much you will have a greasy sandwich.

WHAT TO SERVE WITH THIS SANDWICH

You can easily turn this sandwich into a meal by adding a hot cup of soup or a side of potato chips, sliced pickles or potato salad. On this day I split the sandwich with Eileen and we enjoyed our halves with a hot cup of cauliflower and broccoli soup. (It is a pretty hearty sandwich.)

WHY AIR FRY???

Here are a few reasons why air frying is a great idea!

1. Food is healthier using little or no fat in some instances to cook.
2. Food cooks much more evenly due to the circulation of air around it.
3. Not a lot to clean up afterwards. Air fryer parts more often than not will go in the dishwasher.
4. No more smashed or soggy sandwiches.  Sandwiches stay nice and crisp.
5. Your kitchen stays nice and cool as compared to using the oven.
6. Well suited to cooking for smaller families or individuals.

The filling is delicious, but that bread practically melts in the mouth, with a generous tuna and cheese filling.
