Air Fryer Potatoes & Sausage

I don't know if you are like me or not, but when it gets really hot in the summer months, I will do anything I can to avoid turning my oven on!! My oven is used only as a last resort.  That is when my air fryer really comes into its own and gets a real work out! You can't beat an air fryer when it comes to cooking simple food, quickly and easily, without overheating the kitchen!

Yes, I am sharing another air fryer main dish recipe with you today.  Quick, easy and delicious, this Air Fryer Potatoes & Sausage dinner can be on your table in about half an hour from start to finish, which includes the prep time. Other than seasonings it also uses only a few ingredients.

The recipe can also be adapted to use what you have on hand, other than the basic three ingredients which are potatoes, smoked sausage and onions. I added some chunky diced peppers to mine, but broccoli, zucchini and cauliflower also work very well.

A simple recipe, with easy prep, using ordinary everyday ingredients, cooked without heating up the kitchen and on the table in half an hour? What are you waiting for! This was meant for you! It's the perfect weeknight supper for these hot and busy summer days!  A bagged salad on the side and you're in!

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE AIR FRYER
POTATOES & SAUSAGE

A few simple ingredients. This is a small batch recipe which makes enough to serve two people generously. If you are wanting to feed more simply double the amounts.

  • 3/4-pound (340g) baby potatoes
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 TBS light olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp seasoned salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 pound (227g) smoked sausage
  • 1/2 each (medium) red and yellow bell pepper
  • dried parsley or fresh parsley, chopped for garnishing (optional)
  • honey, mustard, barbeque sauce or ketchup for serving (optional)

Air Fryer Potatoes & Sausage

I used some Little Gems baby potatoes. They were just the right size. I scrubbed them really well and then dried them with some paper towels before I cut them in half. There were red and brown skinned potatoes in the bag. I used only the brown for continuity.

Light olive oil has all of the same health properties of extra virgin olive oil. It has a lighter color and flavor, so it won't affect the taste of your dish. It comes from a later pressing of the olives.

The seasonings suggested are only a suggestion. You can use different ones if you wish.  Herbs are nice.  I like the Kinders seasoning mixes in this as well.

You can use whatever kind of smoked sausage your family enjoys. True confessions here today, I did not have smoked sausage, but I did have some leftover juicy jumbos from my grandson's visit last week that I wanted to use up. That is what I used. The worked beautifully.

You can swap out the peppers for another vegetable if you are not fond of them.  Broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, all work well. Use what you love, love what you use!

HOW TO COOK AIR FRYER POTATOES & SAUSAGE

  1. Wash the potatoes really well. No need to peel. Dry and then cut in half. Pop into a bowl.
  2. Peel the onion and cut into eighths. Drop the onion into the bowl with the potatoes. (Cut in half, then cut the halves in half again, and then cut in half once more.)
  3. Whisk together the seasoned salt, garlic powder, and pepper. Stir in the oil.
  4. Toss this mixture into the bowl with the potatoes and onions. Give everything a good toss together to coat the potatoes and onions with the seasoned oil. (Alternately you can do this in a zip lock baggie zipped shut. I use a bowl to cut down on rubbish.)
  5. Place into the basket of your air fryer. (If desired you can coat your air fryer basket with some cooking spray. I never need to do this with mine.)
  6. Preheat the air fryer to 400*F/200*C. Air fry the potato mixture at this temperature for 10 minutes. Remove from the air fryer, give them a good stir and then return the basket to the air fryer and air fry for a further five minutes. (I use a pair of rubber ended tongs to stir and toss them about.)
  7. While the potatoes are cooking slice the sausage on the diagonal into 1-inch slices. Cut the peppers into large chunks. (I cut each half pepper into halves and then cut the halves crosswise into large chunks.)
  8. Toss the sausage and peppers into the basket of the air fryer and toss together.
  9. Return to the air fryer and air fryer a further 5 minutes at 400*F/200*C.
  10. Remove to a heated serving bowl. Scatter parsley flakes over top (if using.) Serve with your favorite sauce accompaniments if desired.

DELICIOUS HINTS & TIPS FOR MAKING
AIR FRYER POTATOES
& SAUSAGE

  • Purchase ready cooked smoked sausage.  You can also use juicy jumbo hotdogs. Just use what your family will eat and enjoy.
  • If desired, you can use smoked vegetarian or turkey sausages.
  • Make sure you give everything a good stir halfway through the cook time and after you add the sausages. This will help to prevent things from sticking to the basket. It also helps to ensure even cooking.
  • I have used large diced raw peppers in this dish, but if they are not your favorite thing, you can also use other vegetables. Chunky sliced zucchini/courgette, broccoli and cauliflower florets. All work very well.
  • No air fryer? No problem!  You can also cook this very easily in the oven on a baking sheet. Increase the temperature by 25*F/about 5 to 10 *C. and increase the cook time by 10 to 15 minutes.

WHY I LOVE TO USE MY
AIR FRYER

The more I use my air fryer the more I like it and the more I get used to cooking food in it. The first air fryer I got, quite a number of years ago was quite bulky and took up a lot of space. It operated somewhat like a convection oven and had a paddle which stirred the food around in the air fryer space. Today's air fryers are much more compact. They take up a lot less space in the kitchen as well.

My pros for air frying are as follows:

  • They don't heat up the kitchen in the summer months.
  • They have the capacity to cook with a minimal amount of fat, and often much quicker than using a conventional oven, which makes the food a bit healthier.
  • They are much easier to clean than a conventional deep fat fryer and you don't have to worry about getting rid of or storing the oil used.
  • They are much safer to use than a conventional deep fat fryer.
  • They are an excellent means for reheating crispy foods in less time than the oven with crisp rather than soggy results.
  • They are an ideal tool for the smaller family to use when cooking rather than turning on a whole oven, they can often do the same thing quicker and using less power.

  1. I need an air fryer, they just seem so big to store, and I hate things on the counter. I do use the bbq when it is hot. This looks so good, my kind of meal.
