Garlic Bread

You've just cooked yourself a lovely pasta dinner, perhaps spaghetti or lasagna. You are wanting some garlic bread to go on the side, but you don't want to run to the store, and you haven't got any French bread in the house or any baguettes.

We have all been there.

To be honest, you really don't need to buy specially made garlic bread or have a baguette or French loaf in the house to make a tasty side of garlic bread.  This is what I do all the time, and I can promise you that it is buttery, garlicky and crispy.  Plus, bonus, it takes only minutes to make!

Garlic Bread

No need for a specialty bread in house. You can make a quick, easy and delicious garlic bread for the family using plain old sliced white bread. It doesn't need to be thick sliced. Any sliced white bread will do!

This is fast, easy and honestly delicious. I have been doing this for years. Quantities given are for four slices, but you can easily double or even triple the amounts if you have a large crowd in to feed.

This not only makes a great side to all of your Italian pasta dishes, but is also great served with soups or stews. It also makes for a delicious snack when you are just wanting something crisp, savory and hot!

Quick, easy, and delicious, using simple ingredients we all have on hand. Count me in!!

INGREDIENTS NEEDED
TO MAKE
GARLIC BREAD WITH SLICED BREAD

It's really not complicated.  This is a very simple side dish. No baguette or French bread needed, just simple everyday ingredients.

  • 1/4 cup (60g) butter, softened
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 clove fresh garlic, peeled and minced
  • 2 TBS finely chopped parsley
  • 4 slices white bread

I used salted butter. I had no fresh parsley so used dried parsley. If using dried use approximately half the amount. Feel free to use other herbs if you wish as well as the parsley. Oregano and/or basil also work very well. You can also add some hot pepper flakes if you like a bit of spice.

You can use any kind of sliced bread. Italian, French, sourdough or even whole wheat bread for a different texture.

HOW TO MAKE
GARLIC BREAD WITH SLICED BREAD

This is really a doddle, no experience necessary.

  1. Preheat the oven to 375*F/190*C/ gas mark 5. Line a baking tray with some baking paper.
  2. Cream together the softened butter, garlic powder, fresh garlic and the parsley, mixing everything together well.
  3. Lay the bread slices on your prepared baking sheet and spread each slice generously with the garlic butter. (No need to butter both sides.)
  4. Bake for 5 minutes. Flip the slices over and bake for an additional 4 to 5 minutes, until golden brown and crispy around the edges. (If you have added cheese, don't flip the bread, simply continue to bake for the remainder of the time butter/cheese side up.)
  5. If desired, you can pop them under the grill for the last few minutes to really brown them up but do keep a close eye on them as they can burn very quickly. (I have never found this to be necessary, but if you want a browner bread by all means go for it.)
  6. Serve warm.

HANDY TIP:

Bake the bread on a rack on the baking sheet for an even crispier result. This will allow the air to circulate freely on both sides of the bread.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT KIND OF BREAD CAN I USE?

You can use any type of sliced bread that you wish to use.  On this day I used some white Texas Toast, but any sliced bread is ideal.  Preferably white, but whole wheat would work as well.

CAN THIS BE MADE AHEAD OF TIME?

Absolutely. The garlic butter can be made well ahead of time and will keep in the refrigerator, covered, for several days. Simply spread on the bread and proceed as per the recipe when you are ready to make the garlic bread.

CAN THIS BE FROZEN?

You can always assemble the bread slices ahead and freeze on the baking sheet. Once frozen, place into an airtight container or baggie. Place a piece of parchment paper in between each slice. No need to thaw when ready to cook. Just take out and place on the baking sheet and bake as per the recipe. It may take slightly longer to achieve your desired level of golden brown and crispness.

CAN THIS RECIPE BE DOUBLED?

Certainly. Simply double all of the ingredients. Store any extras in the refrigerator, covered for up to four days. Garlic butter on tap?  Yes please!

VARIATIONS

These garlic toasts can easily be varied by adding a few bits and bobs. You can make them into cheesy garlic toasts by adding some grated Parmesan cheese to the creamed butter, about 2 TBS will do for this amount and then sprinkling a TBS or so of grated Mozzarella cheese on top prior to baking. In that case you will not want to flip the toasts over halfway through, but bake them for the entire time, cheese side up.

You can also add some crispy bacon bits or crispy fried onions to the garlic butter if you wish, or along with a cheese topping.  Delicious!

A FEW OTHER
FABULOUS BREAD-LIKE SIDES
OR SNACKS

Here are a few other bread-like sides of snacks that you might enjoy. I can promise you that they are also deliciously moreish!

BAGEL CHIPS - Kind of like bagel shaped melba toasts. Crisp and buttery and ready to spread or serve with your choice of favorite dip or spread, or even just as it alongside of soups.  Quick and easy to make and a great use of stale bagels.

CHEESY TORTILLA GARLIC BREAD Just five simple ingredients and not a lot of each. Crisp and cheesy and perfect to serve with soup or salad, or even on their own.
